Job Title: Coding Analyst
Duties
This is a clinical coding position for an experienced coding analyst. Coding analyst analyze clinical documentation assign appropriate diagnosis, procedure, and, in some cases, level of service codes and abstracts the codes and other clinical data. This information is then used to determine reimbursement levels, assess quality of care, study patterns of illness and injuries, compare healthcare data between facilities and between physicians, and meet regulatory and payer reporting requirements. Coding specialists also resolve clinical documentation and charge capture discrepancies, and provide feedback to providers on the quality of their documentation and charging.
Skills
Code and abstract clinical and demographic data for inpatient, outpatient, or clinic encounters using standardized coding regulations, abstracting rules, and Fairview guidelines.• Knowledge of ICD9 and CPT and related coding/abstracting rules and guidelines• Knowledge of medical terminology• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology,• Knowledge of relationship of disease management, medications and ancillary test results on diagnoses assigned• Proficiency with computer systems, including electronic health record Identify and resolve clinical documentation and charge capture data discrepancies to improve quality of the clinical documentation, severity and reimbursement levels assigned, integrity of data reported. • Knowledge of ICD9 and CPT and related coding/abstracting rules and regulations• Knowledge of medical terminology• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology,• Knowledge of relationship of disease management, medications and ancillary test results on diagnoses assigned• Proficiency with computer systems, including electronic health record• Critical thinking and problem solving skills• Effective written and verbal communication skills Educate multidisciplinary team members, including physicians, about frequently changing mandated rules, regulations and guidelines to ensure a complaint claim. Qualifications
Education Requirements: Certificate program in coding, associate degree in HIM, or equivalent healthcare coding experience. Experience: At least one year of coding experience. Certs: Inpatient Coding: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)Outpatient or Professional Fee Coding: Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) , Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist – Professional (CCS-P), Certified Professional Coder - Hospital (CPC-H) Preferred: Education: Associate or bachelor’s degree in HIM. Experience: Two years of coding experience. Certs: Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA – 4 year degree) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT – 2 year degree) plus additional coding credential AAPC or other specialty coding certification If license/certification/registration not present on hire, it must be obtained within 2 years of employment.
